Child Safety in Cars

Young children and babies should always be placed in the back seat of any car. Don't let them ride in the front passenger seat - it's the least safe position in the event of a crash. What's more, some cars have passenger airbags that can injure children or short people when it inflates.

Always make sure your baby or toddler is securely strapped into a child car seat. Make sure that the seat is the appropriate one for the age and size of your child. The straps on the child need to be snug and all buckles must be properly snapped. This can help save your child's life!

It may be a hassle to make sure everything is buckled and strapped securely, but just imagine how your child will fly out of the car in the event of a car crash if he or she isn't properly strapped into the seat. Children between the ages of 4 and 12 may not need a child car seat, but they must be restrained with a seat belt. Ensure that your car has rear seat belts - if not, get them installed.

Children above the age of 12 can sit in the front passenger seat, but ensure that they wear their seat belt. Even if you're just popping down to the local 7-11 a mere couple of minutes away, buckle up.

The belt should be worn as tight as possible, while the lap belt should go over the pelvic region (from hipbone to hipbone), not the stomach. Ensure that the shoulder strap rests over the child's shoulder, not the neck. Never allow a child to slip the shoulder belt behind their own back or under their arm.

Children being children, they'll grow restless in no time and try to squirm out of their restraints. Be firm with them. Unless they're above 12, ignore their pleas to ride up front, and make sure they're buckled up at all times. Never allow your child to sit on someone's lap even for a short journey.

Also remember, never leave a child unattended in a car. The inside of a car heats up very quickly and they could suffocate. Unattended children are also targets for abduction. Ensuring your child's safety is your responsibility, don't leave room for regrets.
