Changing Engine Oil

Checking and changing your car's oil regularly is one of the most important ways to preserve the life of the engine. Leaks may require expensive repairs and/or replacement of the engine. Engine oils are designed to meet car manufacturer requirements, and therefore need to be changed according to manufacturer recommendations.

In theory, the best time for changing oil depends on a number of factors, including type of driving, wear of the engine and quality of fuel. Often the least important is how far your vehicle has travelled. Unfortunately, the advised intervals for draining oil are only averages, based on a typical type of driving. If driving conditions are more severe, the oil should be changed more frequently in order to maintain the maximum protection and cleanliness of the engine.

How to change your engine oil:

Tools Needed:
-Engine oil
-Clean towel or cloth
-Jack stands
-Oil drain pan
-Funnel
Precautions:
-Always turn off the engine before checking or changing engine oil.
-Pay attention if the engine is hot.
-Handle used oil with extra care.
-Check the oil level before starting the engine as less oil may damage the engine.

Steps to change engine oil:

  • Run the car's engine for 10 minutes before you drain the oil. Warm oil drains faster than cold oil.
  • Park the car on a level surface and turn off the engine.
  • If your car has a low clearance, raise it by driving it onto a ramp or by jacking it up and supporting it securely.
  • Open the hood.
  • Crawl under the car once it is securely supported.
  • Locate the oil drain plug on the underside of the engine.
  • Place the oil drain pan under the plug and loosen the plug with a socket wrench.
  • Remove the plug by hand. Be prepared for the rush of hot oil!
  • Let the oil drain into the pan.
  • Reinstall the plug.
  • Tighten with a wrench or socket. Be careful not to over tighten the plug.
  • Locate the oil cap on top of the engine. Remove it.
  • Place the funnel in the opening and pour in the new oil.
  • Replace the cap when you're finished.
  • Run the engine for a minute, then check the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary.
